Tips for Computer Buyers

The computer industry has a sad history of tricksters using fake parts, pirated software and sales tax evasion. It is in the buyers interest to ensure your supplier is not in this category. These are simple rules to save you from fustration:

Does the seller have a genuine retail outlet?

Many people buy computers from back yard operators. This always looks like a cheap way to buy a computer, but is fraught with dangers. It is common for back yarders to be unavailable when you need help or after sales service. You will also be unable to claim a GST rebate unless you have a taxed invoice from your supplier and the back yarder will be unable to provide you with one.

How long has the retailer been in business?

It has been common in the past few years for new computer shops to open only to close down a little later. People who have dealt with these closed shops usually lose their warranty.

What warranty is offered?

Some retail outlets make no reference to warranty length and conditions on their quotes. In those shops you will probably have no or very little warranty. It is always a very good idea to get a written confirmation of the warranty offered before you purchase your computer.

Was the software sold to you original or a copy?

If the software sold or offered to you were not original copies then the vendor faces a high probability of substantial fines which could bankrupt the vendor. This would leave you with no warranty or after sales support.
